Went to Destin, FL last weekend. Pretty standard beach trip besides the fact that I had extraordinary company. Brandy and Calvin, of course. We went to the only place that we know of that will accept a large dog with being sneaky. Constantly trying to hide a very large dog really screws up your relaxation time.

Brandy is someone who knows how to "beach" and that is a hard thing to do with someone who loves the ocean but kinda hates the beach. Just feed me drinks or pills and the sand doesn't bother me AS MUCH. It has just never agreed with my fair, freckled, sensitive skin. Nor does the sun or salt, for that matter. But she loves it and what with the oil upon us and all. Guess it's better that we went while we could.

Anyway, we did see a little more sea creature action than normal. I guess those critters are being drawn inland to feed since the oil is mucking it up out there. Couple of stingrays, schools and schools of fish (large and small), and a couple of big crabs. The feeding frenzy at daybreak was pretty unreal and kinda scary. We found that sunrise and sunset are my best times for the beach. Although, that is feeding time. Screw it. We were the only jackasses in the water. A bit scary.

So, good times. Good company. Good Pomegranate Margaritas. Successful R & R.

By the way, the guy being buried in the SAND made me want to puke.

It's no wonder that things are so effed up in New Orleans. Take one look at City Hall and you'll understand.
Bran and I arrive to take care of some bizzness:

1) No parking ANYWHERE (but worse today because of the limos for the Inauguration of the new Mayor.)

2) Pass thru the metal detector.........BEEP!........"go on thru." OK.

3) Get into the 1970's building to find that the Christmas decorations (still up in May) can also double as a chain to help form a line. Classy.

4) The filing system looks very organized. (and notice the Zulu coconut on the broken desk)

5) I'm pretty sure that these old records stacked way up to the ceiling are where they should be.

6) Then there is this cracky-looking dude in the Bret Michaels hat who is all over the place, saying hello, going from office to office chasing tail. He is obviously a regular. And as we leave, shouts at me to take his picture. I did.

I only went to two offices and I won't bitch about the second one because I got my way. Although I didn't have the correct paperwork that I needed, I stayed around to "sugar-pie" and "honey-child" the nice lady that was working as we talked about po-boys and seafood and the "earl" spill. After a little small talk, she says, "here you go, I saw the papers I needed to see." And she got me what I needed.

I guess that's how it's done in New Orleans. No rules, just some sugar-pie.

We are refinishing our living room floors and we wanted to see what the under side of the floorboards looked like. So under the house I went. Brandy helped me spider-proof myself in Coveralls (with rubber bands around the wrists and ankles), rubber boots, gloves, goggles, a head lamp, and a classy Walmart bag tied around my head.

Found items:

3 really cool old bottles

some sort of bones that B thought weren't from an animal

1 old styrofoam Big Mac box

1 condom wrapper

3 spiders (not a problem thanks to aforementioned Walmart do-rag)

1 creepy round brick well that looked exactly like the one from "The Ring"

The old tooth we found in the closet was creepy enough. If I see some little girl with her hair hanging all in her face, it's over.

It was a simple work task. Just change a few little baby light bulbs the size of a fucking jellybean. Who knew that they can explode with the force of a hurricane.

It didn't take too long for the ringing to leave my right ear and for my eyes return from seeing nothing but the "camera flash" white sphere of light floating before me. A slight shake to remove the glass from the hair and clothing and a quick check from the good Doctor and I was back to work.

I'm done with light bulbs. They are evil.

Made a trip to Mississippi this weekend. Need I say that I found 3 delicious meals. One at the Pit & Cone, a BBQ and ice cream place. The sides weren't much to speak of, but I didn't come for the sides. The BBQ was something that New Orleans lacks. Maybe the ONLY food that we lack.

Next was a wonderful pork tenderloin and all the fixin's at Michaels house. We then proceded to get smashed on many many bottles of wine and a night cap of Vodka/Red Bull?????

The next day we took a ride across Tupelo, MS to Elvis Presley's birthplace. I've been a few times when I was younger, but I needed a refresher.

Yep, it was still a two-room shack. Just like I remembered it. But it was cool.

3rd meal was from the beautiful roadside Dairy Kream. A cheeseburger, some onion rings, and a milkshake that claimed to "bring everyone to the yard." Mine was a mixture of Butterscotch and Fudge as recommended by the little chubby girl taking my order thru a shoebox-sized window. I was happy. Well, happy until the toothless fah-reeks came around. Yeah, there was a total 'tard infestation but I enjoyed my milkshake nonetheless.

Dammit, I shoulda bought that Milkshake shirt.

Easter 2009

Well, there was certainly a little less debauchery this year but no lack of fun and fancy Easter hats.

With our fancy Easter hats, we went to Boy's for a wonderful dinner. Everything was dee-lish. (special props to Belle's butter lamb and Boy's egg place-settings)

Cut to multiple bottles of Champagne downed, we head to the French Quarter for drinks. Then it's off the the House Of Blues for a Leslie Hall show. We found groovy lighting while waiting for the show to start.

Then the show started with a BANG! It was a great show and Leslie (and her kick-ass backup singers) rocked the house. That girl has some very impressive moves.

It was a bonus to run into her after the show. I drug her over to our little corner....telling her she's gotta meet my people. She put the "sweat" in "sweat hog" but she was lovely. (i know, that was mean)

Top it off with a night-cap at the Saint and Easter has been DID! A swell time, indeed.

I recently got back from my annual buying trip to New York. It is one of the highlights of the year for me because I like it there. My pulse rises a bit.

Had some great meals at The Russian Tea Room (see the gorgeous gaudiness below!), CraftSteak (owned by Tom from Top Chef), Rare, and Carmine's.

Saw some silly Top Model chick in a runway show hosted by Cojo (ewwww!), saw Mickey Rourke (ewwwww!), watched that Christian Audigier guy (yeah, ewww!) cutomize some trashy Ed Hardy shirts. We missed Paris Hilton by a few minutes. I would have loved to hear her baby-talking......"mimi ma mi mo mimi"

Throw in some sight seeing and some good swag and that sums it up.

It's always a good time. I just want Brandy to come with me next time. It's a way to experience NY in a way that I wouldn't normally get to. It's nice to be wined and dined, dammit.

WTF!?!?!

As you probably know, we got snow and it was quite a shock! It lasted from around 7am to lunch time. Everyone seemed to be in a warm, fuzzy, Christmas mood until late afternoon when you could hardly tell that it had snowed AT ALL. Totally gone. But it was fun while it lasted!

I was reading this article in the Gambit (local paper) about a TV show that was filmed in New Orleans in the late 80's. It was centered around a restaurant in the Treme area that supposedly "captured" the flavor of New Orleans perfectly. I was not familiar with it so of course I had to YouTube it. It was called "Frank's Place" and I must say, they did a pretty damn good job.

It was literally rescued from a dumpster in Hollywood and they are working to get it released on DVD maybe as a box set or something. The problem seems to be that a lot of the music and the theme song (by Louis Armstrong) would have to be purchased again for a DVD release. I would buy it.

Yeah, some of the acting is crap. But I think everyone who has ever been here can appreciate it.

Do you ever "discover" a musician or group or song only to find out that the WHOLE world knows about it but you. Do you wonder how in the hell they slipped past you all of those years? Does this happen to anyone else? It has happened to me quite a few times.

Fleetwood Mac, for one. My BFF Elizabeth was playing them years ago in the car on the way to some gayish/ravey/dancey club in Jackson, Ms when I was like, "who the hell is this?" I now have most of their albums on vinyl.

Dirty Mind, by Prince. This one was introduced to me on a "mix CD" from another BFF, Kirschun. I know Prince. I almost dressed as Prince for Halloween a couple of years ago. I can act out the abuse scenes from Purple Rain. How did I miss this rockin' song?

Okay, back to Leonard Cohen. I never knew who he was. I never even realized that one guy sang all of these way cool songs. I've heard many of his songs in movies and loved them all. Now, I finally put it all together and realize that this old guy rocks my world. Great lyrics, greats songs, great voice.

I'm sure there will be more discoveries down the road, but until then, I'm going to enjoy this little golden nugget.

We had another helper! Sistah Grrrrl Kevin came for a visit this past weekend. I didn't know (s)he was such a powerhouse of a yard worker! (S)he was a HUGE help re-arranging the heavy furniture, shopping for a TV, hauling off stuff the garbage collectors won't pick up....just all sorts of stuff! There was a game plan and we stuck to it! I don't know how we accomplished sticking to the plan because booze was involved from before noon-until. (S)he was a MONSTA! Somebody gonna put a ring on that!

Maybe one day I'll post something besides house stuff.

But, I had a VERY successful day! It totally made up for the sucky one I had just had. I unpacked about 8 boxes of kitchen stuff. Washed, dryed, and put away everything on temporary shelves until we get the new kitchen cabinets done.

Then, I rearranged a bunch of boxes and organized my mess. Timmy came over with a gallon of frozen daiquiris and we worked some more. OUT WITH THE POWER TOOLS!!!! I cut 2 new shelves for the bathroom cabinet and removed the door. (sounds dumb, but it is better) Still have to replace the trim.

We moved a very heavy futon to his house which was a real back-breaker. Then I had to return the big flat-screen TV that I had bought the night before. It worked for about 15 mins and then it died right before my very eyes. Piece of junk. Next, a quick stop a Lowe's for more lumber. Then home. Cut two more shelves for bathroom cabinet. (in the dark with daiquiri in hand)

Installed the gas line to the stove. Moved some heavy furniture around. Then caught a cold. In that order.

Brandy is happy to have her new stove. It's shiny and everyone knows that Bran likes shiny.

All i wanted to do was have a productive night at home with a bottle of wine, a small plumbing project, a little natural gas-line hook-up, a quick balancing of the washer, and a slight shaving of a jammed door. It's Friday, why not.

Wrong parts for the gas-line for the third time.

Leaky seals on shower parts....again. And broke a part. 4th shower head. Long story.

Bought wrong tool for wood shaving.

Cut finger.

And I'm not even going to look at the washer.

Sorry, just had to get that out. Seems the only thing I can get right tonight is drinking and watching a shitty Queen Latifah movie on TBS. So here I sit. Damn it all.

I'm not the only one, though. Brandy and I BOTH forgot our 2nd anniversary. We suck. We've been on another planet for a while and we just.....forgot! My mom called tonight to tell me that she had been trying to reach me to wish us well but that was TWO DAYS AGO!!!!

Not only did we forget, but we forgot for TWO DAYS! We're lame.

Anyway, at least I'm off the hook since we both flaked out. I love her and her bad memory.

If anyone ever asks me the question "where were you when Obama was announced as the new prez?" the answer will be that I was in the utility room (a little drunk) trying to hook up my new washer/dryer combo. I heard all of these people in the street screaming and such. What the hell? I almost spilled my wine trying to get off the floor to see who had been shot! Don't do that to a brotha in New Orleans! Jeez.
Anyway, washer/dryer works. Oh, the little things! I'm so proud.

And yet another item to be proud of.....our new poop can for the back yard. It was tastefully decorated by Mrs. B.
I would love for there to be some black hole somewhere in the yard that would just suck up and dispose of all things poo, but until I find it I will be happy to use this fancy bucket.

Okay, it has been a while since I have posted anything but I'm starting to get back to the real world. Brandy and I have been in the new house for about a week now. It is still half boxed up and there is still a LOT to be done. We have accomplished a lot, but only because of the help of our ROCK STAR friends.

Christie and Kenny (and his bro one day!) came down for VooDoo Fest and helped us do all sorts of stuff around the house. There is no way we could have done so much alone. Festivals and home repairs mixed with lots of drinks? How did you do it? Thank you guys a million!!!!

Some of the tasks at hand were.....

demo of the ugly columns with my new SLEDGE HAMMER!!!!....

cutting down the ugly tree........

removing the 1970's metal trim from the window......

chipping away the mortar to re-brick the flower beds......

trimming the HUGE lemon tree.....

The list just goes on and on. Again, our friends are ROCK STARS!!!!

And then comes my replacement. We had to order all new appliances. They came in the other day and I have since been on the back burner. Brandy is now in love with her new fridge. She actually hugs it. (i swear) She rubs it and tells it "good morning." (i swear) I think she would sleep in there is it wasn't so cold. She's a happy girl.

We have lots of work left so I'll put up some pics when we get more done. Can't wait for some visitors in our new guest room!!

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRANDY-BOO!!!!!!

Getting Ready For The Move

Well, our house is all boxed up, the utilities are set up to be transferred, the animals are weirded out.....it's officially moving time. Our lives have been totally taken over with buying this house and preparing for the move. I have never had to deal with so many phone calls, papers, signing of the papers, etc. We are just ready to be done!
We close on the 22nd and move on the 23rd so if we havn't called lately, it doesn't mean we don't like you anymore. It just means our phone is probably in a box somewhere.

I effin' hate this show SO MUCH! These people have to be the most annoying people on the planet. Zoe and her clone assistants, Brad and Taylor, all talk like babies. Valley Girl meets Paris Hilton meets retard. That sums it up.

So when we heard that Gustav was coming, we did what anybody else would have done. Gas up, get supplies, and have a dress-up party at Timmy's house.

Then the reality came with the regular sights and sounds. Boarding up, PANIC on the news, everyone saying we were going to be wiped off the face of the earth. The normal stuff.

Well, Brandy begged me to take the animals outta there and I didn't want to be without A/C for that long.....so I went.

Mistake.

Pictures are not needed to describe what it's like to go home. "Why would you want to live in a place like that anyway?" "You should just move back home." "You should really go see so-and-so because, you know, she's getting REALLY old...."

Screw this. No A/C or not, I was going home.

So it was the regular stuff there, too.

(and yes, Mr Peepers survived the staum!)

We had to either cook or throw out all of the meat in T's fridge so we made it into MeatFest 2008 and just cooked it all. Pretty good. Other than that, we just drank and drank and drank some more. We got drunk enough to not really care about how hot it was or how hard it was to find ice.

One down. Probably a few more hurricanes to go. Then two whole weeks of fall! I can't wait!
